Prevention

It avoids tooth wear, as well as the possible fissures that rubbing can cause, even breaking the tooth.

Occlusal splint

An occlusal splint is a type of dental splint, i.e. an appliance made of transparent acrylic resin that is custom-made for each patient’s jaw, and which is placed over the teeth of the upper or lower arch of the mouth. The purpose of unloading splints is to dissipate the loads caused by involuntary biting and to unload all the tension accumulated in the jaw when sleeping. In doing so, it prevents wear and tear on the teeth, as well as on the temporomandibular joint and all its musculature.

This type of splint serves as a treatment for bruxism, a problem that occurs when a person clenches or grinds their teeth with force involuntarily, wearing down dental structures as they do so. Related to bruxism, it is also a treatment for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, which present discomfort or pain when chewing, as well as clicking sounds in the jaw joint when opening or closing the mouth.

Benefits of the occlusal splint

  • It prevents wear and tear caused by clenching or rubbing teeth against each other, which can cause pain in the jaw, head or even neck.
  • Helps to correct bad habits in jaw resting posture.
  • Helps correct temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, which affect the joints and muscles of mastication that connect the jaw to the skull.
  • Allows muscle relaxation and correct positioning of the jaw joint.
  • It serves to deprogram the muscles so that they are disinhabited to maintain the positions that cause tension and cause the action of clenching and grinding of the teeth.
