Treatment of periodontitis
By scaling and root planing, the deep cleaning aims to remove bacteria from the periodontal pockets. Later, a further examination will be carried out to assess the gingival healing capacity.
If the disease progresses further or becomes much more aggressive, a second phase of treatment is required. Periodontal surgery will treat those periodontal pockets that have been reduced, but not eliminated.
How is periodontitis treated ?
During the first visit, a record will be made of the bone loss of each tooth by means of a periodontogram and a series of X-rays will be taken to help us in the correct diagnosis and treatment plan for the patient. In certain cases we also carry out a microbiological analysis of the bacteria in the mouth.
The first part of the treatment consists of the removal of calculus or tartar from under the gum using curettes and ultrasound, known as scaling and root planing or the basic phase. This treatment is performed under anaesthesia and should not be uncomfortable for the patient either during or after the treatment.
