What are overdentures?
Overdentures on implants replace all or part of your missing teeth. With an overdenture you get a natural look and a firm bite. They allow the aesthetics and functionality of the mouth to be restored.
Overdentures are removable prostheses, which are placed on special implants with a system called locator (male-female), which gives the prosthesis greater support than traditional removable prostheses that are simply supported on the gum. They allow the patient to be comfortable and secure with the prosthesis and can also be removed, which facilitates hygiene.
How do overdentures work?
Depending on the patient’s needs, one of two types of implant-supported overdentures will be offered, either ball-retained overdentures or bar-retained overdentures. Both types are fabricated from an acrylic base that is designed to resemble porcelain or acrylic gums and teeth to give a natural tooth appearance. In addition, both types of implant-retained overdentures require at least two dental implants to be installed in the jaw bone in order to provide sufficient support for the overdenture.
Ball-retained overdentures have an alveolus that is attached with up to five implants that have been placed in the mouth. Alternatively, bar-retained overdentures include a thin metal bar that follows the curve of the jaw, with the implants held in place by clips.
